Save Your AMD Blurred Eyes With Xanthophyll Carotenoids

Millions of people ages 50 and over experience blurred or distorted vision due to age-related macular degeneration or AMD. This disease is the leading cause of irreversible blindness among adults and affects one in three people over age 75.

Physiology of the disease

Our eyes have the so-called macula, a highly pigmented yellow spot near the retina. It is the one responsible for making you clearly distinguish fine details. As we age, the cells in the macula deteriorates, which affects the center of your vision. The center of vision is what we use for reading, writing, driving, and identifying faces.

The yellow color of the macula is due to high concentrations of two essential yellow Xanthophyll Carotenoids, namely, zeaxanthin and lutein. This yellow pigment absorb excess blue and ultraviolet light to protect this part of the retina from damage. As we age, these two xanthophyll carotenoids decrease. The macular pigment density in turn lessens, thus reduces its effectiveness as a protection from ultraviolet and then the macula can become damaged.

There are two types of AMD, the dry and the wet. The wet one is the dangerous kind because blood vessels tend to be very fragile, and they often leak blood and fluid under the macula, which further deteriorates the macula, causing rapid and severe vision loss. Even if you have been diagnosed of dry AMD, there is still danger because it can progress to the wet type. So there is a need to take action once diagnosed of AMD.

Prevent or Stop the Course of AMD

A case-control study by researchers at the University of Florida, found that healthy diets rich in lutein and zeaxanthin could lower the risk of AMD as much as 82% compared with those outside that group. (Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci 2001 Jan;42(1)235-40). Other studies also support that a diet rich in Lutein and Zeaxanthin can restore macular pigment density and ensure that the macular is effectively protected against macular degeneration. Eating red grapes will also help reduce your risk of AMD.
Be sure you are getting sufficient intake of Zeaxanthin and Lutein to ensure healthy macula. If not, you need nutritional supplements for eye health. In one study of AMD patients who were taking high-dose lutein supplements of 4 mg or more per day, patients experienced normal levels after a few months. The best way to ensure you are getting zeaxanthin and lutein is to take Ethos Bright Eyes capsules or to use the New Focus Lutein Sub-lingual spray.

Life expectancy of people all over the world is rising due to economic progress and modern medicines. But what is long life if you are unable to pursue normal activities like driving, reading and recognizing faces? When the central vision is not clear and the clear parts are only the periphery of your vision, it is very difficult to live a normal life. Save your eyes now before it is too late.
