How to Find a Septic Field
- 1). Find the "as-built" diagram of your septic field. This diagram should have been provided for you when the field was installed or when you purchased the property.
- 2). Contact your local Health Department or government office if you cannot find a copy of your as-built diagram. They should have a copy on file for your property.
- 3). Find the sewage pipe that runs from the inside to the outside of your home. You will be able to see this pipe near your basement or crawlspace before it disappears underground.
- 4). Use a method to follow the pipe and find the septic tank. The pipe and the tank make up the septic field on your property. You can use a steel rod to poke into the ground to follow the pipe to the tank, or you can use a metal detector to follow the pipe. The tank itself will be reinforced by metal bars, so the metal detector will be able to help you find it quickly.
