Video: How to Play "Story of My Life" by Social Distortion
Video Transcript
In this segment, we're going to talk about Social Distortion's Story of My Life. It's more of an open chorded song, and the riff is really recognizable. The thing you're going to have to focus on is muting some strings and some standard chords. Let's take a look at the guitar. The first chord we're going to do is a G5 chord. It's a normal G chord, but instead of playing with this finger, we're going to take it off and lay our middle fingers down to mute that string. The only strings that should ring out are these. This one's muted, and the rest should ring out. The next chord we're going to play is a C add9 chord. It sounds like this. You're going to put your middle finger on the 3rd fret of the A string, your index finger on the 2nd fret of the D string. Your G string's going to be open, but your B string's going to have your ring finger on it, like this. Only focus on those four strings. Hook your thumb over to mute the low string, and use your pinky on your right hand to strum them all, and not have those rings out. The last chord is a D chord, just a normal D chord, from the D string down. Open D. 2nd fret of the G string, with your index finger, 3rd fret of the B string, with your ring finger, and 2nd fret of the high E string, with your middle finger. And that's followed by a little riff out of the major pentatonic scale. And then we return. Now I want to mention, now, that before we actually go into the song, that our guitar is in a 1/2 step drop tuning, instead of your standard E, A, D, G, B, E. You tune your guitar down a 1/2 step. Those notes would be D sharp, G sharp, C sharp, F sharp, A sharp, and D sharp, from low to high. Let's go back to the song and take a look. We're going to give it a swing feel, with the rhythm on our right hand. Let's do that to speed. It sounds like this. You'd repeat that riff a few times over the introduction, and well into the verse. Uh, the next song we're going to look at is Rock and Roll All Night and Party Every Day by Kiss. I'll see you there.
