While these stilettos planted with hens and chicks won't last forever, they are pretty cool while they do and would make a great decoration for a bridal shower or a birthday party.

To turn these stilettos into container gardens, I drilled holes in the soles of the shoes, near the toe, figuring that I would water the plants from the top of the shoe and the water would run down and drain out of the hole.

For each shoe, I took a plastic, heavy duty Ziplock type bag, and stuck the corner of the bag into the toe of the shoe. I lined the the rest of the shoe with the bag. I then took a pencil and poked the bag through the hole in the sole of the shoe, so the hole would be lined with plastic and the water would drain right out through the plastic without, not wetting the layer of cardboard, in the sole of the shoe, that I had drilled through. I put a small piece of screen over the hole and then filled the plastic lined shoe with potting soil.

After doing this I cut off the excess plastic, so you wouldn't be able to see it.

I planted the hens and chicks, by sticking them in the potting soil. It took awhile to get an arrangement that I was not only happy with, but one that stayed in place.

The hens and chicks are 'houseleeks' and 'red beauty,' and 'purple beauty.'
