The older your home is the more likely it contains lead. In 1978 the Federal Regulations placed a limit on the amount of lead in paint for residential use starting in 1978!
You should check all painted surfaces inside and outside your home. Some of the most overlooked are fences, gutters, handrails, mailboxes, sheds and very important for children the swing set.
Many times people have lived in the home for years and decide to renovate, repaint or remodel your home built prior to 1978. You or your contractors should also use precaution and test prior to any disturbance of this paint.
The most extensive tool used to determine if you have lead paint problems is the Portable X-Ray Flourescence Analyzers (XRFs). Another testing method is to take paint samples which are then sent to a laboratory for further testing of lead. These forms of sampling can be quite expensive for the do it yourself remodeler and there are other sample kit options available! There are test kits which you take the samples and have them sent to the lab for further results or now instant lead testing swabs.
If you plan to do it yourself please read all federal regulationas and guidelines then check your own state for it's regulation due to the differences between each states laws and regulations. The EPA and state fines and fee's can be quite high for failure to comply with the regulations. Also your own life or health issues along with your family, friends, neighbors or future inhabitants are much greater reason to comply.
