Best Dog Breeds For Apartments
Ever wonder how the dog breeders and show dog owners get the pick of the litter every time? It's been a secret among the breeding community for years.
But finally you are going to know exactly how they determine the best dog out of the litter and this same test will help you find the best dog for your apartment.
It all happened when I was involved in a filming project for Three Best Dogs.
The trainer in the clip was going to do what is called a "Temperament Test" with a new litter of puppies.
We got everything in place with our cameras and lights.
The trainer was mic'ed up and ready to go.
There was a small audience of dog owners sitting in the back of the room in the shadows.
On the floor of the facility where we shot were three people, at the nine, twelve, and three o'clock positions.
The lady at the twelve o'clock position had a clipboard with a list of tests each puppy had to pass.
And what was so exciting was to see how each puppy, from the same litter, acted differently.
The first puppy came when the lady called.
His head went up and he galloped across the floor.
Even when distracted by the other "humans" sitting on the floor, the puppy was determined to go when called.
Another interesting test was a sort of "pinch" test.
The lady would have the puppy in her lap, just like a regular owner would, and then she would pinch the front paw.
The object here was to see the reaction of the dog.
Would they bite? Or would they simply yelp? When you're researching for a dog for your apartment, or any home, really, the results of these tests are good to know.
You can easily choose the dog that is gentle and doesn't spend the whole time chewing up things.
I was also able to see which dog obeyed better, and this is important especially for people who have not had a dog in a long time.
There are more items on the temperament test and the best thing is you can use them when you go to a breeder or even a pet store.
Ask to have the puppy separate with you.
Most pet stores have pens where you can sit and observe and interact with the dog.
Take three or four of the temperament tests and perform them on the dog while you are at the store.
Take notes.
You will quickly see which is the best dog for you and you won't be disappointed.
