5 Safety Tips For Women Driving Alone At Night

103 21
Longer workdays and shorter daylight hours are a primary reason that many women find themselves driving alone at night.
Trips to the store, evening classes and visits to friends may also find you out and about after dark.
No one ever expects to be the victim of an attack, but every day, scores of women become the target of an assailant.
This is why you must be prepared to defend yourself.
Additionally, darkness provides an excellent cover for assailants, so if you drive at night, take additional precautions during that time.
  1. Follow populated routes.
While driving the back roads may save you a few minutes of travel time, the savings may come at the expense of your safety.
The isolation normally found on these types of roads provides an excellent point of attack for a predator.
Since they are less traveled, help may not come as quickly as you need it.
Imagine breaking down or having an accident on a back road with little or no cell phone signal.
You might have to rely on a passing motorist to assist you.
While most people are not criminally inclined, why leave it to chance?
  2. Keep predators out of your car.
Lock the doors and roll up the windows.
This is especially important when you are at an intersection.
A recent poll asked women if they had ever felt bad after locking their doors at an intersection because it may have hurt someone's feelings.
About 32% said yes, and a few said they kept the doors unlocked, rather than risk hurting the feelings of someone they considered 'seedy'.
In order to avoid this make it a habit to lock them as soon as you get in the car.
If you have to adjust the seat, mirror or radio, do those things after you have locked potential attackers out.
  3. Pick your parking space carefully.
Select the nearest parking space to your destination.
If a close space is not available, then look for an area that is well lit.
Avoid parking next to any type of van or vehicle with dark tinted windows.
  4. Pay attention when you are driving.
    Put down the cell phone.
No text message, email or Facebook update is so important that it can't wait until you reach a safe location.
Always be aware of your surroundings when you are getting into your vehicle or approaching an intersection.
  5. Have your keys and a self defense weapon in your hand.
Don't fumble around in your purse looking for your keys while standing by your car.
Same goes for your pepper spray or stun gun.
Make sure you have these ready to go before you leave the building.
Predators look for the weakest prey, the easiest target.
Taking these few simple precautionary measures can keep you from being their next victim.
