How to Draw Comics Using Photoshop

    • 1). Open Photoshop by double-clicking its icon on your computer. Drag down the "File" menu and choose "New." Enter "300" for the resolution. Enter the width and height you would like your comic to be. Choose "Grayscale" for your color mode, choose "Transparent" for the background contents and Click "OK."

    • 2). Click the "Paint Brush" tool in the Toolbox and click the "Foreground Color" box. Enter "0" in the boxes next to "R," "G," and "B" to select black as your foreground color. Click "OK."

    • 3). Click on the "Brush" tool in the toolbar across the top of the window and click and drag the sliders back and forth in the pop-up window to choose the size of your brush and the hardness of its stroke. Click the "Brush" tool icon again to close the pop-up window.

    • 4). Click and drag your cursor to draw your comic with the "Paint Brush" tool. Release the mouse button to reposition the cursor and draw new lines by clicking and dragging. Draw only the outlines of your comic at this time, as color will be added later. Drag down the "File" menu and select "Save" to protect your drawing once the outline is complete.

    • 5). Drag down the "Mode" menu at the top of the screen and choose "RGB" for comics meant for the Internet or "CMYK" for comics meant to be printed out.

    • 6). Drag down the "Layer" menu, select "New," and choose "Layer." Click on this new blank layer in the Layers Window and drag it to a position beneath the layer that contains your comic artwork. Click on the new blank layer in the Layer Window to make sure it is selected.

    • 7). Click the "Paint Brush" tool in the Toolbox window, click the "Foreground Color" box in the Toolbox, and click on a color you'd like to use in the "Color Picker" window that appears. Click "OK."

    • 8). Click the "Paint Brush" tool in the Toolbox and apply colors on the layer beneath the black-and-white comic by clicking and dragging with the paint brush. Select new colors by clicking on the "Foreground Color" box and using the "Color Picker." Apply them to other areas beneath your comic, which will show through the layer with the comic. Drag down the "File" menu and select "Save" once you are done coloring to protect your work.

    • 9). Drag down the "Layer" menu and select "Flatten Image" when you've finished your comic. Drag down the "Image" menu and select "Image Size." Change the resolution to 72 dpi if you are going to post this image on the Internet; otherwise leave the resolution at 300 dpi. Click "OK."

      Drag down the "File" menu and select "Save as," choosing the JPEG format for Internet images or TIFF for printing. Give the drawing a new name and click the "Save" button. Don't use the same name or the flattened image will overwrite your original.
