How to Set Up Horse Shoes
- 1). Unravel a length of string and measure out a 40 foot piece using a measuring tape. To make things a bit simpler, you may want to measure out 10 feet at a time.
- 2). Take your string to the playing area. The playing area should be flat and covered in grass or dirt. Lay the previously measured string on the ground so that it stretches across the playing area.
- 3). Walk to one end of the string and use a shovel to create a small indentation in the earth. This is horseshoe pit. The pit should be approximately 3 feet in diameter and 6 inches deep in the center. The pit will act as a pocket of sorts, preventing stray horseshoes from rolling across the yard.
- 4). Rake out the pit to remove any large rocks. Step inside the pit to smooth and harden the sides. You might not want to create these pits on well-manicured lawns.
- 5). Position the sharpened tip of one of your horseshoe stakes in the center of the pit. Hammer the stake into place so that 14 to 15 inches of the stake projects from the ground at a slight angle toward the center of the horseshoe court.
- 6). Step inside the horseshoe pit once more and pack down the dirt around the stake to lock it in place.
- 7). Walk along the length of string to the other end. Repeat Steps 3 through 6 for the opposite horseshoe pit. Be sure to throw the string away after you construct the court.
- 8). Place four regulation horseshoes beside one of the newly installed stakes. The court is now ready for use.
