How to Use Silver Birches As Sound Barriers

    • 1). Assess the intended site to ensure that silver birches are compatible. Silver birches need rich, moist soil and cool summer temperatures. They are prone to insect and disease problems and may not be long-lived. Silver birches grow 60-to 75-feet high. Ensure you have adequate space for these large trees.

    • 2). Ask your local utility company to mark underground utility lines before planting, since you'll be digging several deep holes to plant the silver birches. Consider overhead power lines, as well, when choosing a location for your sound barrier.

    • 3). Intersperse silver birch trees with other trees and shrubs to make a more aesthetically appealing sound barrier. For year-round soundproofing, plant evergreen trees with the silver birches. Use 30 percent evergreen trees to 70 percent deciduous shrubs and silver birches, advises the Yakima Herald. Planting silver birch with evergreens may also protect them from high winds and blowing snow.

    • 4). Plant the shrubs and trees in staggered rows, instead of in a straight line. The effect is more pleasing to the eye and may also more effectively muffle sound.
