Instructions for Planting a Bing Cherry Dwarf Tree
- 1). Select a time to plant your dwarf bing cherry tree. "The usual practice is to plant early in the spring, but planting can be completed in the fall when weather conditions are good and the soil is moist," according to the British Columbia Ministry of Agriculture.
- 2). Select a location for your tree. Unlike standard cherries, which require at least 25 feet, dwarf varieties only need to be spaced 12 to 15 feet apart. Cherries do best in full sunlight.
- 3). Dig a hole for your tree with your shovel. The hole should be approximately double the size of the tree's root system.
- 4). Place your tree in the hole, spreading out the roots without damaging them. Cut away any damaged or broken roots. Plant at the same soil depth as the tree was originally potted.
- 5). Cover the roots thoroughly with the dirt from the hole. If desired, adding compost at this step will provide extra nutrients to the tree. Be sure the dirt is packed tightly to prevent any air around the roots.
- 6). Water the tree thoroughly.
- 7). Mulch the tree to help the roots retain moisture and to prevent weeds from growing up around the tree. The mulch should not come into direct contact with the trunk, however, as this can encourage the growth of harmful fungus and bacteria on the bark.
