How to Make a Screw Jack
- 1). Slide on a pair of work gloves and safety glasses to protect your skin and eyes.
- 2). Dull the edges of a 1/4-by-5-by-5-inch steel plate with an abrasive sanding block. Dull all edges of every steel plate from this point on with the sanding block.
- 3). Pre-heat a solder gun. Rub solder wire on the tip of the gun. Wipe the tip clean with a damp sponge.
- 4). Position a short end of a 1-by-4-inch hollow metal cylinder atop the 5-by-5-inch plate at the center. Touch the solder wire to the connection point between the base of the cylinder and the plate. Touch the hot solder gun tip to the wire to secure the bond. Continue soldering in this manner around the entire base of the cylinder.
- 5). Insert a 7/8-by-10-inch bolt into the cylinder. Screw a 7/8-inch nut onto the bolt.
- 6). Drill a 7/8-inch hole through the center of a 1/8-by-4-by-4-inch steel plate. Remove any steel burrs with the abrasive sanding block. Slide the 4-by-4-inch plate over the bolt so it sits atop the nut.
- 7). Place a short end of a 1/4-by-6-inch metal dowel rod atop the 4-by-4-inch plate, 1/8-inch removed from the edge. Solder the dowel rod into place. Repeat with three additional rods on the additional three corners.
- 8). Solder a second 1/8-by-4-by-4-inch steel plate atop the four short ends of the dowel rods. The second steel plate asks as the shelf for the jack. Twist the bolt clockwise and counterclockwise to raise or lower the jack.
