Inline Skates Buying Guide
- 1). Figure out what types of activities you will use your inline skates for. Any pair of inline skates can be used for basically any activity; however, choosing a pair made for the activity will give you the best results. Some examples of activities include freestyle skating, speed skating, hockey, fitness activities, recreational use and aggressive skating, which usually involves stunts.
- 2). Decide on a budget. You can find skates for as low as $35, but to get a quality pair of skates you should expect to pay a little over $100. For serious athletes, such as hockey players and aggressive skaters, more expensive, specialized inline skates are available that can cost up to $1000.
- 3). Determine your dominant foot. Most people have a right dominant foot, but about 10% of people have a left dominant foot. Purchase skates that have brakes attached to the back of your dominant foot.
- 4). Try on the skates and make sure they fit comfortably and that you can easily use the fastening system of the skates. Skates fasten with buckles, laces or a combination of buckles and laces. Sometimes, the fastening system can push on your foot in an uncomfortable way, and inline skates that only use laces may not provide beginners with enough support.
- 5). Purchase your inline skates from a store that will offer assistance after the purchase and that will allow a return or exchange after the skates have been used. This is important because you won’t really know if they fit properly until you skate in them. Specialty stores may be more likely to help you after you purchase your skates, but large sporting goods chains may also have helpful salespeople and appropriate return and exchange policies.
