How to Remove Minor Rust off of Gun Bluing
- 1). Unload all ammunition from your gun before handling the weapon. This is an absolute necessity given the extremely dangerous nature of guns and ammunition. No matter how sure you are that the gun is not loaded, always do a visual check to make sure there are no bullets in the chamber.
- 2). Drop a small amount of light oil on the area where there is rust. Start with only one drop, as you can always add more if the rust does not dissipate after the first round of cleaning.
- 3). Run the oil into the affected area of rust with a paper towel or cloth. A cloth will provide better cleaning capabilities but a paper towel will suffice if it is the only cleaning material you have available. Rub lightly in a smooth and even circular pattern over the rusty area.
- 4). Rub the rusty area very lightly with a fine steel wool. Never use anything else but steel wool and only rub the area that has been oiled up. Only exert a small amount of pressure. Continue with the circular pattern that you used with the oil.
- 5). Wipe the area clean with a dry towel or soft cloth. Thoroughly dry the area as this step will remove any pieces of rust that are loosely connected to the gun. Once you have finished drying the gun, visually inspect the area that you just cleaned to see if there are any remaining rusty areas.
- 6). Repeat the process if there is more rust. Often it will take several rounds of cleaning to eliminate all rust. Take care to not apply more pressure with the steel wool on the subsequent rounds of cleaning. Keep the pressure uniform throughout the rounds of cleaning and eventually the rust should weaken, break apart and be eliminated from the gun's surface.
