Germicidal UV methods are formally called Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation. In short form, its is known as UVGI. This is one of the methods of sterilizing water or the air, but with the use of a unique medium. This method uses ultraviolet lights directed at the object to be purified. The UV rays in this method are focused on the application at sufficient short wavelengths in order to break down the microorganisms. UV germicidal methods can be used on a variety of objects or applications such as food, the water system or even circulating air.
So what makes the Germicidal UV method effective?
The UV rays which have been directed in short wavelengths is dreadfully harmful to the microorganisms that come its way because it destroys the nucleic acids within the organism. Nucleic acids are very important elements of the DNA. Once these are destroyed, the organism will have damaged DNAs, therefore destroying their capabilities in reproducing.
Where do UV rays come from and how is Germicidal UV used?
We often relate UV rays as part of the harmful rays of the sun. This concept is correct, but how could we still survive despite its harmful effects? The answer is because of the Earths atmosphere. The atmosphere blocks these rays so that it is never directed to the living things on Earth. If, there are those that get past the block, that will have to be already very little and does not cause any harmful effects as long as exposure is not prolonged. UV rays getting into the atmosphere is however, very rare.
So if the occurence of this type of light is rare, why is it then being used to purify? This is because scientists have already discovered how to harness and control this type of light with the use of a UVGI device. Once the device emits the short wavelengths of harmful rays the object to be purified is directed to it, or vice versa, depending on the type of object or matter being cleaned up. The UV germicidal method is applicable to the purification of a water system or air inside a room, office or laboratory. This process kills the molds, pathogens and viruses that may have been present or may have been in high content within the application.
When did the technology and technique start?
The UV germicidal method has been around for quite sometime already. This had already been effective and considered as a valid technique in sterilizing during the mid 20th century. Used primarily in medical sanitations, the methods popularity eventually grew as by now, it is already an effective sterilizer for water and even the air.
Is germicidal UV really effective?
Judging by the length of time the methodhas been around, and in the areas which it has already been used, we can safely say that yes, the method is effective. Like other scientific methods, its effectivity however, is governed by many factors. These factors include the length of time the matters or objects are exposed to the rays, the type of microorganism that is supposed to be eliminated, and the possibility that there are particles that help protect the microorganisms during exposure. And even more complicated factors in fact, are the line of sight meaning the areas in which the UV rays directly hit, and some power fluctiations.
Never the less, once all the factors are tidied up and looked after with precision, then sterilizing using germicidal UV will go on smoothly and most effectively.
