    • 1). Attach the garden hose to a water spigot from the private water well system. Run the water from the water system until it runs clear, if applicable.

    • 2). Pour 1 gallon of unscented household bleach into the well. Most drilled well systems have a removal cap on top of the wellhead casing. You may need a small funnel on some wellhead openings to pour the bleach down the well.

    • 3). Run the end of the garden hose into the top of the well casing. Turn the water spigot on. Leave the water flowing into the well until you smell a strong bleach odor. Shut off the garden hose.

    • 4). Open all water faucets inside and outside the home. Run the water from each faucet until you detect a strong bleach smell. Close the water faucets. Wait at least six hours and up to 24 hours as recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency for a thorough disinfection.

    • 5). Open the outdoor spigot with the garden hose attached. Run the water into an area where the chlorine bleach will not harm plants or open bodies of water. Flush the water system until all bleach odors have cleared.
