How to Carve Fast on a Snowboard
- 1). Practice applying pressure to the edge of your snowboard in a stationary position. To apply pressure to the front, press your knees forward until the snowboard is on its edge. For the back, apply pressure to the heels and bend your knees like you are sitting in a chair.
- 2). Take the lift up to an easy or intermediate hill and practice traversing horizontally across the slope. Dig your toes into the snow and push your knees forward for a toe-side traverse. When you reach the edge of the slope, make a turn by shifting your weight to your front toe and turning the board straight.
- 3). Dig your heels into the snow to complete the turn, and then practice your heel-side traverse going horizontally across the slope in the other direction. For a heel-side traverse bend your knees and stick your buttocks out. Shift pressure to the front to turn the board straight and then toe-side traverse in the other direction again.
- 4). Check your snow tracks to see how you're doing. If they are wide you need to keep practicing. Once your track lines are thin you are ready to carve downhill.
- 5). Point your snowboard straight and practice your toe-side and heel-side traverses downhill. Apply as much pressure as possible to get the snowboard on edge.
- 6). Reduce the time between your traverses so you are switching from your toes to heels quickly.
- 7). Get your snowboard high on edge to increase your speed.
- 8). Move up to an advanced slope to really increase your carving speed.
