The Best Ways to Trim Body Hair

Short, Fine Hair

Very fine hair or "peach fuzz" is easy to trim because of its texture. While coarse hair needs a sharp blade, the best way to trim very fine hair is with a small electric or battery-operated trimmer meant for delicate areas to prevent irritating the skin. Also, small single-blade disposable trimmers often referred to as "eyebrow trimmers" or "disposable trimmers" come attached to a plastic handle, so running the small blade over areas with fine hair can trim the hair to the skin's surface without irritation.

Longer, Medium Texture Hair

Longer, medium texture hair is definitely coarser than peach fuzz, but it's not as coarse as a beard. Body hair comes in all lengths and textures; when you find yourself dealing with this type of medium texture hair, start with the basics. Quite often, the best way to trim body hair is with simple scissors (be sure it's scissors meant for cosmetic use). For larger areas of the body, consider using a mid-size electric trimmer for use on body hair; these trimmers have one or more toothed blades that vibrate and cut through hair when turned on. For a trim that does not cut the hair to the skin, look for a trimmer sold with "guards." A guard is a plastic attachment that allows you to choose how long you want the hair to remain.

Coarse Hair

For thick, coarse body hair, look for a large trimmer made specifically for coarse body hair. Turn to shaving if an electric trimmer is not giving you the results you desire. Contrary to popular belief, according to Dr. Lawrence E. Gibson of the Mayo Clinic hair will not grow back thicker and darker if you shave;, so rest easy. You can use an electric razor made for the entire body or a safety razor. Remember, when using a blade directly against your skin, lubricate the skin with a gel or cream first to prevent irritation.
