How to Separate Paper Iris Bulbs
- 1). Dig up the clump of iris rhizomes and roots.
- 2). Wash off the soil so you see the divisions in the bulbs.
- 3). Prune the leaves back to withing 6 to 7 inches of the main stalks.
- 4). Use a knife to cut larger rhizomes off at the divisions. Each new rhizome should maintain 2 to 3 leaf "spears" for future growth.
- 5). Mix a disinfectant solution of 1 gallon of water to 1/4 cup of chlorine. Soak the rhizomes in the solution for an hour to remove bacteria.
- 6). Dry the rhizomes for two days and give them time to heal from the stress of being dug up.
- 7). Replant as desired.
