How to Separate Paper Iris Bulbs

    • 1). Dig up the clump of iris rhizomes and roots.

    • 2). Wash off the soil so you see the divisions in the bulbs.

    • 3). Prune the leaves back to withing 6 to 7 inches of the main stalks.

    • 4). Use a knife to cut larger rhizomes off at the divisions. Each new rhizome should maintain 2 to 3 leaf "spears" for future growth.

    • 5). Mix a disinfectant solution of 1 gallon of water to 1/4 cup of chlorine. Soak the rhizomes in the solution for an hour to remove bacteria.

    • 6). Dry the rhizomes for two days and give them time to heal from the stress of being dug up.

    • 7). Replant as desired.
