Vacationing in the Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina does not mean leaving your best friend behind. Many rental cabins in the area cater to pet owners and their furry companions. Recreational activities abound, including rafting, fishing, cycling, horseback riding and golf. Go hiking in the mountains with your canine, or relax and take in the scenery. Regional attractions (where pooches are not welcome) include the Vanderbilt's Biltmore Estate in Asheville, the country's largest house. - With a name like Barkwells, they've got to like dogs. In fact, their motto is "Come. Sit. Stay." Barkwells offers eight fenced acres for safe canine frolicking. Amenities for people include a stocked fishing pond and hot tubs. The luxury mountain cabins, named after favorite dogs, vary in size from one to two bedrooms. Some cabins have additional sleeping lofts and one is handicapped-accessible. All cabins offer satellite TV, fireplaces, barbecue grills, fully-equipped kitchens, completely fenced yards, doggie beds and bowls. Linens are provided for dogs as well as owners.

barkwells.com - For those looking for privacy for themselves and their pets, just eight cabins surround a mountain lake on 40 acres half an hour from Asheville. Cabins are as much as a quarter mile apart. Fish from the stocked trout pond or hike the nature trails. Four smaller cabins are suitable for romantic getaways, while the larger ones can accommodate the whole family and Fido. Most cabins have wood-burning fireplaces and all have hot tubs. Biltmore Estate ticket packages are also available.

The four cabins allowing pets have doggie gates on the porches. Each cabin includes a year-round private hot tub, fully-equipped kitchen and satellite TV. Cabins are angled away from each other for privacy. The nearby Spring Creek Nature Trail offers plenty of dog-walking opportunities. Also close by is the Pisgah National Forest in view of the cabins.
