Review: Mask and Snorkel Combo for Carry On Travel
Carry On travel means bringing one bag small enough to take onto the airplane. This means avoiding baggage fees and it doesn't allow for a lot of extras.
Carry On budget travelers who like to snorkel have been forced to rent gear at their destinations. Not everyone is thrilled about putting a used snorkel in their mouths or a mask that others have strapped on a few hours earlier.
The folks at CWIC, a licensee of Body Glove, faced this very situation and decided to develop a snorkel and mask that would fold up into a neoprene pouch not much larger than a case for your sunglasses.
The result, introduced in mid-2009, is the Enfold Combo from Body Glove, a collapsible two-window mask and a silicone snorkel that rolls up and hooks closed while you're in the travel mode.
When the Enfold Combo arrived, I could see immediately that it wouldn't take up much room in my suitcase. The decision to cart it to Costa Rica was an easy one. But I had some doubts about how well it would perform in the water.
I've always had trouble getting a rented mask to fit my head properly. The result is water leaking into the mask and a far less satisfying snorkeling experience. How much better would a mask work that's designed to be small and easily transported?
The mask is equipped with a silicone skirt that not only makes it easier to fold up, but also adheres in airtight fashion to your face. There were no leaks during my 30 minute snorkeling session.
There are better masks on the market than this one, but there are also many of lesser quality that don't provide a scratch-free, fog-free, diver-quality look at the sea's treasures.
The snorkel that rolls up so easily also snaps to the side of the mask, making it easy and comfortable to use.
The combo sells for $30-$40 USD and should be available soon at sporting goods retailers. There is also a set of fins from Body Glove for $45 that would work well with this combo. You might want them for snorkeling close to home, but they won't help much with your packing goals.
You are likely to find a combo set for much less money, and a folding mask and snorkel might be pretty hard to sell to the most serious of snorkelers.
But those of us who simply want to practice Carry On travel and enjoy some nice snorkeling spots will find the Enfold Combo from Body Glove is a shrewd buy.
