Underfloor Heating Installation

Underfloor Heating Installation refers to the installation of electrical heating systems under a floor.
When considering electrical underfloor heating, the correct type of installation is required, as floors are constructed from various types of materials, and these need to be taken into consideration when undertaking such a project.
Installation is determined by the type of floor and the type of system to be used.
The three main types of system include:
  • Cables for tiled floors
  • Cables for for mats, carpets etc
  • Carbon film for wooden floors
A typical installation for a cable system on a concrete sub-floor would be;
  • Concrete sub-floor followed by flexible tile adhesive; insulation; cable system; more flexible tile adhesive, and then finished with the desired tiles.
Underfloor heating insulation can be carried out by specialist installation companies, or any competent DIY enthusiast.
Floor preparation is an important process when installing any underfloor heating system.
Floor preparation for a cable heating system will include :
  • Concrete sub-floors - new concrete should be allowed to dry or cure naturally, and a thin layer of levelling compound may be applied if the floor is uneven.
  • Wood sub-floors- wood floors should be level and clean, and over laid with the appropriate plywood boarding if necessary.
  • Primer and or sealant may need to be used on both concrete and wood floors to enable good adhesion of the adhesives.
With underfloor heating the heat from the system will radiate both up through the floor and down into the wooden or concrete sub-floor.
For this reason some form of thermal insulation is generally required, and a good quality thermal barrier between the heat source and the sub-floor can significantly improve the performance of any system.
A good quality and thick insulating material will give better results, speeding up the warming process and saving money on electricity costs.
Underfloor heating is fast becoming popular.
They are easy to use and once installed will provide many years of maintenance free heating.
These systems are proving very popular because of their space saving qualities, there's no unsightly radiators, boilers or other heating appliances, and the heat is evenly distributed throughout the room.
There are several different types of system.
Most of them are powered by electricity, but some systems may even use hot water, however this requires a completely different type of installation.
