    Aging Process

    • When a dog's lenses clouds as it grows older, it's developing cataracts. This doesn't mean anything serious, other than the dog is growing older. Cataracts are a natural part of the aging process for many dogs and cats. For some pets, even though it appears they cannot see out of the eye, the fact is that they can determine shapes and even react to light.

    Diet and Exercise

    • One of the primary causes of canine cataracts is diabetes. Overweight dogs tend to develop diabetes, so by keeping a dog's weight down, this reduces the risk of diabetes, which reduces the risk of developing cataracts.

    Bottom Line

    • If the dog develops cataracts, adding anti-oxidant supplements to the dog's diet might help in slowing down cataract development and progression, according to Dr. Ron Hines, DVM. In addition, there are medical techniques to surgically remove the cataract available. Providing a healthy, low-fat diet rich in vitamins E and C might well help slow down the cataract development.
