You can recognise a rare vendor item on its limited supply.
Whenever you see a number in parentheses beside the item, you'll know that there are limited supplies, and chances are that you can make a nice profit by purchasing it from the vendor, and resell it either in AH or on the Trade channel.
There are plenty of such vendors around.
Make it a habit to put your mouse over each Non-Player Character, you meet, to see, if by chance this one should be a vendor.
Some of them will sell rare pets.
Others will sell recipes, herbs, or gear.
If you install the add-on Auctioneer, and scan the Auction House frequently, you will even know how much to charge for the item.
Don't be surprised if you find an item, which can be purchased for 40 silver at the vendor and sold in AH for 80 gold.
And this profit is even at the low end.
Some pets will bring you several hundreds of gold, even though you only pay 40-50 silver.
Should Auctioneer not have a price for you, which happens if you have only scanned the Auction House for a short period of time, there's a chance that you can find the price online.
