    • 1). Connect your media extender device to your home network. A media extender device is a piece of hardware that is able to access shared media files on your computer and send them to other devices it is connected to, such as a stereo or HDTV. The specifics of this step will vary depending on which media extender device you decide to use. Many media extenders are stand-alone products designed specifically for media extension. Other devices, such as the Sony Playstation 3 or the Microsoft Xbox 360, serve other purposes but double as media extenders.

• 2). Select the media files you wish to share on your computer. Navigate to each folder you wish to share using Windows Explorer. Right-click on a folder and highlight the "Share With" option from the menu that appears. You will see several options including "Nobody" "Homegroup (Read)" and "Homegroup (Read/Write)." Select either of the Homegroup sharing options. Choosing the read-only option will prevent other devices on your home network from making changes to shared files, while selecting read/write will allow this. Note that if you have multiple sub-folders within a larger folder you only have to share the larger folder.

    • 3). Access your shared files using the media extender interface. This step will vary depending on your media extender device. On a Xbox 360, for example, both the Xbox and the TV it is connected to must be powered on. Once both devices are powered on, press the Xbox button in the center of the Xbox controller and press right on the directional pad to highlight the "media" tab. From here, simply choose what type of media you are trying to access and a list of all shared media of that type will be displayed on screen. Consult the users manual for your media extender device if you experience difficulty with this step.
