    Odometer

    • According to About Automobiles, 1999 Expedition owners reported numerous instances where the digital odometer works intermittently. Drivers also reported that the odometer inaccurately reads the number of miles traveled, often doubling them.

    Consequences

    • Although an improperly working odometer may seem like an annoyance, there can be serious consequences. Not being able to read an accurate mileage may result in being unaware of when to change your oil. Additionally, not being able to calculate your mileage may disqualify you from a mileage-based warranty.

    Solution

    • Repairing a faulty odometer requires a new electronic instrument cluster panel, which costs approximately $600 for parts and labor (as of January 2011). You also have the option of purchasing a used cluster for less money. By law, the used cluster's mileage has to be reset to reflect your vehicle's current mileage. The typical dealer charges approximately $85 to $100 to program the mileage.
