Creating a Plan

• Succulents need shade to grow without receiving sunburns, according to the University of Arizona. Sunburnt succulent plants discolor and decline in health. Also, the type of weather your area receives will determine the variety of succulents you can grow. For example, cacti tolerate temperatures between 80 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit, while man-leaf succulents prefer temperatures between 65 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the University of Arizona. Measure a shady area to get an idea of the size of the frame or container you want to use.
  
  

Planters and Frames

• Gardeners may use pots or frames available at gardening supply stores. However, there are numerous items around the home that can support succulents. File drawers, teapots and window frames may be used, according to Susan Morrison and Rebecca Sweet, authors of "Gardening Up." In fact, gardeners may build their own succulent screens using lumber, mesh, a staple gun and plywood, according to "Sunset Magazine." Whatever you use, make sure that it has draining holes if it is a container and can be attached to a wall.
  
  

Succulent Planting

• Make your succulent potting soil by mixing one part loam, one part peat moss, one part sand, one part perlite and one part vermiculite, as suggested by the University of Arizona. Pour your potting mixture into the container of your choice and plant your succulent. If you want to attach the succulent to a frame, cut 10-inch circles of mesh material, as recommended in "Gardening Up." Spread sheet moss in a thin layer over the frame and pour soil on top. Place the succulent inside the soil. Bundle the mesh material and tie together. Once you have made your bundle, you can attach it to a frame using wire.
  
  

Care

• Succulents that are growing in bundles dry out more quickly than those growing in pots. The right amount of water depends on the temperature; feel the soil to see if it is dry. Mist succulents with rainwater to keep their soil moist. You can prevent overwatering the plants by allowing their soil to dry out in between waterings. One of the nice things about vertical gardening is that you don't have to worry about your plants sitting in water.
