Honey Locust: Gleditsia Triacanthos

104 17

    Growth

    • Thornless cultivars are available for planting in suburban settings where the tree's standard sharp thorns are a nuisance and can pose a danger. A fast growing tree, the honey locust often grows 2 to 3 feet per year when young. It grows best in U.S. Department of Agriculture Zones 4 to 9.

    Planting Requirements

    • Plant the honey locust in full sunlight for the best growth results. Trees subjected to shade often suffer dieback on their lower limbs. The tree prefers moist soil conditions and thrives in both bogs and swamps but can also tolerate periods of drought well.

    Considerations

    • Consider planting the honey locust tree in areas that suffer salt spray because the tree tolerates salt conditions well. The tree also makes a sturdy windbreak and will withstand heavy winds without breaking.
