    • 1). Pour clean water into the designated area of your steam cleaner. All steam cleaners are a little different, so make sure you study the manufacturer's instructions carefully before steam-cleaning your car seats.

    • 2). Turn on the steam cleaner. This is usually done by pressing a button near the top of the steam cleaner. Again, refer to the manufacturer's instructions. The steam cleaner will then boil the clean water inside, creating steam.

    • 3). Pick up the hose or nozzle of your steam cleaner. Make sure the cleaning tool is firmly attached to the end of it. Choose the cleaning attachment that is generally recommended for carpet cleaning. Recommended uses for the various attachments can be found in the instructions.

    • 4). Place the end of the cleaning tool onto your car seat. With a slow, deliberate motion, move the tool along the entire length of the seat. Repeat this process until you've steam-cleaned the entire surface of the seat.

    • 5). Move to the next seat, and repeat Step 4. Continue moving around the car until all the car seats have been steam-cleaned. If there's an area in the car that has a particularly offensive odor, such as if the passenger frequently smokes, steam-clean that area a second time to ensure all odors are removed.
