How to Install a Root Barrier
- 1). Purchase a barrier depth that fits the type of plant grown. Choose a 30-inch barrier for trees and invasive bamboo. Invasive flowers and herbs require a 12-to-18-inch deep barrier to prevent spreading.
- 2). Measure the barrier depth and dig a 12-to-30-inch trench around the area you are installing, depending on the barrier chosen. Plan the trench depth so there is 1 to 2 inches of barrier protruding above the soil.
- 3). Insert the polyethylene or rubber barrier panels into the center of the trench. Interlock the panel edges, if available, or overlap them about 2 inches where the edges meet.
- 4). Seal the panel overlap with a plastic or rubber cement caulk. Verify the barrier protrudes a minimum of 1 inch above the soil.
- 5). Fill soil into the trench and tamp with a shovel handle to hold the barrier in place. Pour water over the trench to compact the soil and create a secure barrier. Add soil if there are sunken areas.
