Sleep is a problem for millions of us.
The 2009 Sleep in America Poll reported that 72% of Americans don't get the 8 hours of sleep they need.
Your body and brain need good quality sleep because that is the time your body uses to repair itself and rejuvenate cells in your brain, your muscles, your skin, your bones and organs.
All the systems of your body need down time to refresh and rejuvenate themselves.
If you think you don't need that much sleep, think again, eventually sleep deprivation will catch up with you and can cause stress in all the systems of your body.
Rest lowers cortisol levels.
Cortisol is the "stress" hormone.
In order to get a better nights sleep and get on the road to better health, better looks and less stress, follow these suggestions: 1) Go to bed! Do not watch TV on the couch until you fall asleep and drift in and out of sleep and finally drag yourself in to bed some time in the middle of the night.
This is setting yourself up for a terrible night of sleep.
When you get tired, go to bed.
2) Try to go to bed at roughly the same time every night, hopefully with enough time to get 8 hours of sleep before its time to get up again.
3) If you read in bed at night before going to sleep read something that won't get your mind racing and disrupt your sleep such as a horror story or thriller.
4) Use lavender.
The scent of lavender works on the deep limbic system of your brain to calm and sooth.
Studies show that lavender reduces stress hormones (cortisol) and increases relaxation.
Lavender essential oil or spray lavender water is easy to find.
Keep it on your bedside table and spray it around your bed or put a drop of oil under your nose as you are going to bed.
5) Get yourself in the relaxation mindset well before bedtime.
Don't exercise or eat right before bed.
Meditation or deep breathing will promote relaxation.
Avoid video games or TV that get your mind going.
6) Avoid naps.
If you have been having trouble sleeping at night try not to nap during the day which will throw off your sleep cycle even more.
Use these tips to naturally sleep better and give yourself the sleep you body needs and you will reap the benefits that a well-rested body provides.
Its worth it and you deserve it!
