How to Use Tubing for Sugar Tapping
- 1). Drill a 1.5- to 3-inch-deep hole in the trunk of the selected maple tree. Use a 7/16-inch or 5/16-inch diameter drill bit, depending on the diameter of the spile. Drill the hole at an upward slant so the sap will drain out easily.
- 2). Tap the spile into the hole using a hammer. Sap should start to drip from the spile. Attach the tubing to the end of the spile, using whatever length of tubing you need to reach your central collection point.
- 3). Tap and insert spiles and tubing in other trees in the area. Extend the tubing from all the spiles into one central, covered collection container, preferably downhill from the trees you've tapped. Collect the sap from the container every one to two days.
