    • 1). Push the air valve on the tire in with a small dull object. Release the pressure in the tire before you put it on the changer.

    • 2). Set the stick on the tire changer on the side of the tire as close to the rim as possible. Make sure the tire is secure and push down to get the tire loose from its rim. Many do-it-yourself mechanics have manual tire changers. You are breaking the seal between the tire and the rim. You need to break the seal in three different places on the tire.

    • 3). Pick the tire up and put it over the top piece of the tire changer. The top piece sits in the hole in the rim of the tire.

    • 4). Screw the top of the tire changer loose and secure the position of the tire with the locking pin by putting it through a bolt hole on the rim. Lock the tire with the "spider" and screw the top of the tire changer back on.

    • 5). Rub dish soap around the bead of the tire where it touches the rim. Take the extension arm of the tire changer and squeeze it between the rim and the tire. You are actually pulling the tire over the rim. Slide the extension arm of the tire changer all along the rim lifting the tire up and over as you go. Without moving the tire, reach in and grab the lower tire and lift it in the same way over the rim. Make sure you use dish soap for both sides of the tire. Now that the tire has lost it is air and is off the rim, you can repair the puncture.

    • 6). Push the plug tool into the hole of the tire. Cut a plug larger than the hole in the tire and put it in the end of the tool as it rests on the inside of the tire.

    • 7). Pull the plug through the hole until you can't pull it anymore. The tire needs remounting and air added to it to pressurize the tire, forcing the plug into the puncture and creating a seal. Reattach the tire to the rim by placing it back on the machine and using the extension arm to pull the tire back onto the rim on both sides of the tire. Do the bottom and then the top of the tire.

    • 8). Add air to the mounted tire and watch the plug push from the inside out into the puncture, creating a seal.
