How to Plant Pyramidal European Hornbeam

    • 1). Find an appropriate planting site. The European hornbeam does best in full sun but is tolerant of shade. It can also tolerate a range of soils, as long as it drains well.

    • 2). Buy a small sapling from a nursery, as larger European hornbeams are difficult to transplant. Dig a hole with a shovel that is twice as wide as the root ball of the European hornbeam. The hole should be deep enough to hold the tree at the same soil level as its previous container.

    • 3). Remove the European hornbeam from its container without disturbing its root system. Spread the roots out without damaging them, and place the tree in the hole. Fill the hole with soil and pack it down firmly. Water the soil thoroughly.

    • 4). Water the European hornbeam thoroughly once a week during the first growing season. This will ensure that the tree develops a deep root system quickly. Reduce the watering schedule after the first year, as the European hornbeam is very drought tolerant.

    • 5). Apply a general-purpose fertilizer once before the growing season begins in the spring. Prune any dead branches in the winter. The European hornbeam grows slowly and is resistant to diseases, so you shouldn't need to prune it very often.
