Word processors make it possible to create and reproduce print-quality documents in any home or office--no more onionskin paper and whiteout. Because all edits are hidden in the printout, the final document can look as pristine as a typeset document. In addition, changing or moving text around the document is much easier than the physical cutting and pasting required before the advent of word processors. Finally, format changes can be applied to the entire document immediately.

    Input and Editing

    • While the input interface for word processors is the same as the typewriter--a keyboard--what happens after that is radically different. The word processor makes it possible to move text around, delete sections with a click, or add underlining and italics. In some word processing programs, the edits of multiple reviewers can be stored simultaneously for later review, so you can get input from a group of people and make final decisions at the end of the editing process.

    Formatting

    • Word processors can make global changes to document formatting, which means that you don't have to go through a document page by page making alterations. This also means that formatting can be applied after the fact, even once the document has been completed. You can simply write the text without concerning yourself with final formatting questions, and apply the format you need (such as margins, headers, footers and font size) to fit your needs.

    Document Quality

    • The quality of documents produced on a word processor is extremely high. Professional-quality printouts can be achieved by anyone with a word processor and an inexpensive printer. There are no longer any excuses for typos, as these can be easily eliminated electronically and a fresh document printed.

    Sharing Documents

    • As word processors store your documents electronically, they can be easily shared with others by email or other electronic means. In addition, it is easy to produce multiple copies. The electronic storage format saves space as well, although it is always advisable to have printed backups made of your electronic records.
