Mattress longevity is often disregarded by many people.
We expect our mattress to last for more than 10 years.
But even if you are using a popular brand of mattress, there is no guarantee that it will last long.
There are certain problems that speed up the deterioration of mattress.
I am certain you would not want to be the recipient of a saggy and lumpy bed.
That being said, you should maintain and take good care of it.
Here are a few simple tips you would want to try: 1.
Try placing wooden slat beneath your mattress.
Box spring already helps support your bed and reduce sagging but you can avoid this further by placing wooden slat under the mattress.
The vertical slats should have half an inch of space between them so that air can still penetrate inside and reduce accumulated heat.
2.
Vacuum your mattress once a month.
This will help avoid the accumulation of dust mites and dirt particles.
Use a shop vacuum and vacuum all sides of the mattress.
Also remove dirt and dust under the mattress and on the box spring.
Change bed sheets to clean ones.
3.
Use the right protective arsenals.
A good mattress cover can help ward off bacteria, germs and dust particles.
If you usually use your bed as a dining area, you should get a mattress cover to prevent spills and stains.
It makes clean-up easier.
Many people do not like using mattress covers because of the plastic lining.
However, there are now more comfortable mattress covers that can still repel moisture and spills.
4.
Rotate or flip the bed.
This will even out wear.
Rotating is your only option if you have one-sided mattress.
Although one-sided beds are considered more sanitary, they are not really ideal because they can sag easily.
You cannot flip it on the other side.
Just try purchasing double-sided beds so you can take advantage of both sides of the mattress.
5.
Replace the mattress topper.
Toppers are usually installed on the topmost layer of the bed.
You can unzip your bed and remove the topper and replace it with a new one.
If you are not using a mattress with a zipper, just install the topper directly on top of the bed.
Make sure you secure it properly to prevent it from getting askew.
Place comfortable bed covers.
6.
Remove stains as soon as possible.
Do not let stains dry up or they can turn crusty.
Pre-treat stains using a mild cleaning solution.
You can also use natural cleansers like vinegar or lemon juice to dissolve stains.
