Device Has Never Worked Properly

• If you are attempting to install a new USB device and have been unsuccessful, the problem is likely to be driver-related. If your new USB device includes an installation CD, run the installation program on the CD before connecting the device to your computer. In most cases, the installation software will notify you with a message when it is time to plug the device in. Device Works Intermittently

• If your USB device functions intermittently, it may be receiving insufficient power. USB devices draw a small amount of current directly from the port that they are plugged into. Avoid plugging high-draw devices such as printers, scanners or MP3 players into the USB ports in the front of your computer. Utilize the ports in back instead; these USB ports are directly connected to your computer's motherboard and can supply power more reliably. • Certain older motherboards with VIA chipsets exhibit incompatibilities with some USB devices. These incompatibilities were resolved by VIA with a driver update. If your computer's motherboard has a VIA chipset, these updated chipset drivers must be installed or USB devices may fail to work properly. Device Suddenly Fails

• If your USB device suddenly stops working, don't panic. Some USB devices can conflict with other peripherals that are used at the same time. Unplug the device and reconnect it. Restart your computer if this does not work. If the device continues to fail during operation, see if you can detect a pattern. Some USB modems, for example, are known to work incorrectly if a USB printer or scanner is used simultaneously. If your device stops working at completely random intervals, consider replacing it. • Don't neglect your operating system when you are troubleshooting USB problems. Microsoft has released numerous updates for Windows XP that resolve USB issues, so ensure that your Windows installation is completely updated if you experience a problem.
