    • 1). Try a simple reboot of your computer before attempting any solutions that might involve more time or expense. Restarting the system often solves the problem.

    • 2). Go to "http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx" and get the free update for Windows Media Player. This download includes many of the latest codecs necessary to play DVDs.

    • 3). Purchase third party codec software and install it so that your DVD player can read the encrypted DVD.

    • 4). See if an expired decoder is the reason that your DVD player will not work. You can do this by setting the clock back on your computer, restarting the system and trying to play the DVD again.
