    • 1). Look for the "22R" designation on the engine block. On the lower front driver's side of the engine block, there is a flat surface which contains the "22R" designation with the engine's serial numbers found nearby. The flat surface is below the first freeze plug, near the bottom of the engine block.

    • 2). Find the plug cast on later model 22R engine blocks. According to Ice Engineering's Tech FAQs, there is a cast, bow-tie shaped plug just before the oil pan rail, below the middle freeze plug on the driver's side of the engine. This presence of this plug indicates a 1985 to 1995 22R/22RE "Laser Block." Earlier 22R engines do not have this feature.

    • 3). Measure the Toyota engine block. According to Ice Engineering, the 22R engine measures 11.28 inches from the oil pan rail to the top engine deck surface. The oil pan rail is the bottom of the engine block, where the oil pan mounts to the engine. The engine deck surface is the top of the engine block, where the cylinder head mounts to the engine block.
