    • 1). Restart Windows XP in "Safe Mode." Once your computer is up and running, launch the "Windows Task Manager" and then wait on the deletion confirmation dialog box to open task manager. Go to "My Computer" and then click on the "Local Disk C" Drive. In the "address" bar at the top, type "C://Windows/System32" and then click the green arrow at the right hand corner of the address bar to search the C Drive. Scroll down the alphabetical list, and Locate the "WgaTray." Once you locate "WgaTray," delete it.

    • 2). Press "Yes" when the Task Manager prompt appears and then press "Yes" to confirm deletion when you are prompted to confirm the termination.

    • 3). Launch RegEdit and then browse to the following location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify. Delete the folder WgaLogon and all of its contents and then reboot Windows XP.

    • 4). Go to the "Control Panel" and then to the "Security Center" and then to "Automatic Update" settings. Select the third option "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them," and then click "OK." It will take some time for the Windows Updates icon to appear in the system tray. Once it pops up in the system tray, click on the Windows Updates icon to display a list of available updates and then unselect the check box for the "Windows Genuine Advantage Notification Tool."

    • 5). Click the "Download" button. At the prompt, select "Don't notify me about these updates again."
