- 1). Determine whether the ledger boards will be attached to an existing concrete or wood structure. This will determine the type of anchor system you will use. For concrete wall attachment, use the sleeve anchors that work by expanding into the concrete as the bolts are tightened. For wood structures, drill through the existing structure and through the ledger board, and use the bolts, washers and nuts to attach the board.
- 2). Measure the location of anchor holes along the length of the ledger board. The holes should be located approximately 24 to 48 inches on center for adequate strength. Mark the same spacing on the concrete or wood structure. Using a drill and the 9/16-inch drill bit, drill holes through the ledger board. If the existing structure is wood, drill similar holes through it as well. For concrete structure, use a 1/2-inch carbide-tip drill bit to drill holes in the concrete for inserting the sleeve anchors. The carbide tip is specially designed to drill through concrete and other strong materials.
- 3). Align the ledger board on the structure so that the holes in the board and the holes in the structure line up. For wood structures, place one of the washers on the bolts, then push the bolts through the holes, with the bolt head facing out. For concrete structures, insert the sleeve anchors through the holes in the ledger board and into the holes in the concrete.
- 4). Place washers and a nut on the end of the bolts from inside the building, if the existing structure is wooden. Tighten the bolts by having one person use a wrench to hold the nut in place on the inside, while you use the socket wrench to tighten the bold head from the outside. For the sleeve anchors in concrete, simply hand-tighten, then use a socket wrench to tighten the sleeve until a firm grip in the concrete is achieved.
- 5). Tighten all bolts, regardless of material, in a similar fashion. Once all bolts are tightened, the ledger board is secure.
