      As of 2010, Internet Explorer 6 is the earliest version of the venerable Web browser that Microsoft still supports. Internet Explorer 6 is included with the Windows XP operating system--later versions of Windows use later versions of Internet Explorer. If you are running an older version of Windows such as Windows Millennium Edition and have not kept your computer updated, the version of Internet Explorer that you have is no longer supported. Check the system requirements for Internet Explorer 6 to see if you can upgrade your browser.

    Operating System

    • To install Internet Explorer 6 on your computer, the operating system needs to be Windows 98 or later. The supported operating systems also include Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0. Internet Explorer 6 does not support Windows 95.

    Processor and Memory

    • Internet Explorer 6 requires a computer with at least a 66-MHz Intel 486 processor, or the equivalent from another company such as AMD. For best performance, you should have a Pentium-class processor or better installed. For memory, Internet Explorer 6 requires at least 16 MB of RAM with Windows 98, and 32 MB with any newer version of Windows. Internet Explorer 6 also consumes between 8 and 13 MB of hard drive space, depending on the version of Windows installed. In addition to all of these requirements, your computer must meet the minimum specifications that your version of Windows requires.

    Interface Devices

    • Internet Explorer 6 uses a graphical interface. In order to utilize the browser properly, you need to have a mouse and keyboard or alternative human interface device installed.

    Installation Device

    • Internet Explorer 6 is available as a free download from Microsoft. However, you may still be able to find installation CDs in circulation, manufactured for customers who wanted to install Internet Explorer 6 so that they could get online with their computers for the first time. Your computer needs an optical drive such as a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive to install Internet Explorer 6 from a CD.

    Display Adapter and Monitor

    • In order to properly view the web pages that Internet Explorer 6 renders, your computer requires a display adapter and monitor capable of displaying images at a resolution of at least 800x600 pixels and with 256 colors.
