How To Send DSL Signals Farther From a Modem to a PC

    • 1). Set up your wireless modem or router on a steady, high location like a desk or a counter. The device should be placed away from any obstructions, such as furniture, and away from metal, like file cabinets or desks.

    • 2). Move other wireless devices and electronics, such as cordless phones, away from the router to prevent signal interference. This will help the signal spread farther, and with greater strength.

    • 3). Update your modem's firmware. Firmware updates often contain bug fixes, security patches, and performance enhancements than can increase your signal strength. Access your modem's settings using your web browser (typically done by typing a command, which varies depending on the modem you use, into the address bar) and look for the option to update the firmware.

    • 4). Purchase and install a wireless repeater. A wireless repeater receives the incoming signal of your modem, boosts its strength, and sends it out. The overall range of the wireless connection will improve. Place the repeater somewhere between your modem and your computers. Set it farther away from the modem to increase the signal. Repeaters are especially useful if you have a large home or weak signal in certain areas.
