    • 1). Open the air vents to the attic completely to vent the polluted air outside. If your attic has ventilation fans, turn on the fans. Place your air purifying dehumidifier(s) or air purifier(s) in the attic. Turn on the equipment and leave on at least eight hours.

    • 2). Put on a mask and gloves. Remove any mothballs and mothball remnants from the attic. Throw the mothballs in the trash and vacuum surfaces as needed to remove mothball dust and flakes.

    • 3). Fill a large bucket with warm water. Add 1/2 tsp. tea tree oil to the water. Soak a sponge or lint-free microfiber cloth in the water.

    • 4). Squeeze out as much water as possible from the sponge or cloth. Wipe all surfaces that mothballs touched -- disposing of the water and repeating with fresh water, oil and sponges or cloth as needed until you've cleaned every surface thoroughly. If you don't know which surfaces came in contact with the mothballs, wipe down every surface in the attic.

    • 5). Pour kitty litter or baking soda on any absorbent surfaces after cleaning to draw out the remaining odors. Wait at least eight hours and then vacuum the kitty litter or baking soda. Turn on your air purifying dehumidifier(s) or air purifier(s) and wait eight hours.

    • 6). Put cedar chips or whole cloves in sachet bags or in old nylon stockings. Close and secure the sachet bags or stockings and place around the attic to dispel the remaining odors and repel insects.
