- 1). Open Windows Explorer by clicking the "Start" button and then entering "Explorer" in the search box and pressing the "Enter" key. Alternatively, click the "Windows Explorer" icon on the task bar if it is present.
- 2). Maximize the Windows Explorer window by clicking the square icon in the upper right-hand corner of the window. The maximize icon is located between the "-" and "x" icons in the window.
- 3). Press and hold the "Shift" key while clicking the "X" icon to close the window. Windows Vista will reset the settings for the Windows Explorer window and open it in a maximized state until you change the again change the settings with the "Shift" key.
