Free Weights vs. Cable Machines

    Identification

    • A free weight is a weight used for resistance training in which motion is not restrained by any external apparatus or cables. Types of free weights include dumbbells, barbells, hand weights and resistance bands.

A cable machine is a large apparatus used for resistance training that has a steel frame, cables and a weight stack.

    Benefits

    • Using either free weights or cable machines offers several benefits.

Free weights enable lifters to complete a variety of exercises with few tools. They are inexpensive, portable and take up very little space. They are good lifting tools for anyone who needs to modify movements due to injury, and they can recruit more muscle groups per exercise than machines.

Cable machines are simpler to use than free weights, require less coordination and balance, ensure good form, and isolate specific muscles or muscle groups accurately, which is especially beneficial when recovering from injury.

    Drawbacks

    • There are also drawbacks to using free weights and cable machines.

Dropping free weights can result in serious injury. Constantly changing plates on free weights can take up time. Free weights require balance and coordination, and failure to maintain proper form can lead to serious injury.

Cable machines are expensive and require a lot of physical space. Because each machine usually targets one muscle group at a time, lifters will need to use more machines to strengthen more muscles.
