A Lesson in Perfume Bottles

Used to soothe the human body, perfumes are created using fragrant essential oils and other aroma compounds.
They must be stored in airtight containers otherwise there is the risk that the fragrance may evaporate.
Eau de toilette or Eau de Cologne perfume bottles are manufactured with lids or stoppers to prevent the evaporation of the fragrance and are a good way to store them.
Perfumes can also be damaged by sunlight; therefore many bottles are made using opaque, colored or faceted glass to protect them.
Perfumes have been a significant part of society since early civilization.
Remains from bottles have been found in Egyptian tombs.
The use of perfume was also evident in Venice, where manufactures created small, decorative glass perfume bottles during the Renaissance period.
The bottles were so attractive their use spread across the land during the 16th and 17th centuries to places like England, France and Silesia.
Many glass manufactures in Italy continued to produce decorative bottles.
Murano is one well-known example.
Many of the glass works were decorated using strands of contrasting colored glass to create a latticework effect.
In other areas different designs were popular.
For example, in Germany white glass bottles with embellishments and enamels were more popular.
Perfume bottles in England gained further popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries, and they began to use more than just glass to make the bottles.
For example, enamel, silver and porcelain were all materials used to make perfume bottles during that time.
The enamel bottles were made to contain glass vials with lids or stoppers that held the perfume.
Often the bottles were decorated with painted flowers, classical scenes or landscapes.
Porcelain is a popular material for making perfume bottles.
They are produced in a variety of shapes and sizes and made to resemble items such as nuts, golf balls and shells.
Although perfume bottles have changed over the years, the more delicate and feminine bottles created especially for women during the Victorian era are still cherished by many women.
Some even collect the most exclusive bottles ever made.
