Soil for Planting Leek Seeds
- Leeks require well-drained soil with a neutral pH between 6 and 7. The soil needs to be high in organic matter and have consistent moisture. Leeks require a 4-inch layer of organic mulch to keep the roots consistently moist and cool.
- Find a location with full sun for growing leeks. Move the plants to a new garden location each year in order to prevent problems from soil disease, thrips and maggots.
- As the leek plant grows, mound up additional soil around the stems. This process of blanching at the base of the plants increases the length and thickness of the shanks.
