Likewise hazardous drugs also have two edges.
On one hand, it can cure crucial diseases and save numbers of lives and on the other hand, it can induce several health hazards to numbers of lives that gets exposed to it.
The negative affects of the hazardous drugs are not only confined to the patients that use it.
According to numerous research works, the workers engaged in all sort of drug related activities like drug manufacture, handling, administration, monitoring, transport, distribution, storage, disposal, waste treatment are more prone to exposures to hazardous drugs that induces lethal health complications.
According to the reports developed by the National Safety Council (NSC), the hospital staffs suffer from 41% more injuries and illness as compared to the staffs in other industries.
The medicines and other medical products that are used in hospitals for the treatment of patients contains cytotoxic and antineoplastic agents that are highly disastrous and their exposure can cause short term as well as long term health hazards.
Safe handling of the noxious substances and different medicines such as toxic chemicals requires a lot of care.
Minor negligence can also lead to vital consequences.
Accidental leaks and spills can occur in any of the drug related activity that can cause severe health hazards.
The exposures to harmful drugs also highly contaminate the surroundings and make it an unwanted place to live.
These contaminations can result into short term as well as long term health defects.
