How to Restore Windows XP Back Onto Laptop
- 1). Turn on your computer and back up any important information on an external hard drive. Depending on the amount of data you have, you might want a 250 gigabyte to 1 terabyte hard drive. Make sure you transfer all important data, because a clean installation of Windows XP will wipe all data clean.
- 2). Restart with the Windows XP installation disc inserted into the laptop. Make sure to boot from the CD. Most laptops will ask if you want to boot from the CD on restart with a "Press any key to boot from CD" message.
- 3). Press "Enter" to start the Windows XP setup at the "Welcome to Setup" screen. The next screen will be a "Microsoft License Terms" screen. Press "F8" to agree to the terms and move on with the setup.
- 4). Press "Esc" to bypass the Windows XP repair option and do a clean installation of Windows XP.
- 5). Delete the partition in which Windows XP is installed. This should be on the "C:" drive. Use the arrows to highlight the option and then press "D" to delete it and "L" to confirm.
- 6). Select the now unpartitioned space and click "C" to create a new partition for Windows XP. Use the arrow keys to select the unpartitioned space. Press "Enter" to complete the creation of a new partition.
- 7). Select the new partition with the arrow keys, and in the format option select "NTFS." Then press "Enter" to format it for Windows XP.
- 8). Follow the general steps for the Windows XP installation. After formatting the drive, Windows XP will automatically begin installing. The laptop will reboot several times.
- 9). Log in as a user when the Windows XP log-in screen pops up. When you see this screen, the Windows XP installation is complete.
